About the Journal

Focus and Scope

Studia Europaea Gnesnensia is a journal of local, national and international scope. The subject matter of the journal is focused on broadly understood European culture without chronological and problematic limitations. The research areas covered in the texts published in Studia Europaea Gnesnensia are reflected by the following keywords: roots of Europe, history and culture of Europe, identity of Europe, the idea of Europe. The main objective of the journal is promoting an in-depth debate on European culture in the broad sense of the term. From 2021, the journal  is annual (we publish one issue a year).

The papers, review articles, reviews and polemics published in our journal span such scientific disciplines as history, history of art, archaeology, architecture and urban planning, philosophy, linguistics, ethnology, cultural studies, religious studies, literary studies, media studies, cognitive and communication sciences, political sciences and law. Texts are published in Polish, English, German, French, Italian and Spanish.

The review process

The Scientific Council conducts a preliminary verification of the submitted texts and appoints two reviewers for each article. An article which, in the opinion of the members of the Scientific Council, does not meet the formal and/or substantive requirements may be rejected and its author will be notified of this fact and/or asked to introduce suggested changes and resubmit the text. When choosing a reviewer, the continuity of their research interests with the subject of the submitted text and knowledge of languages (in the case of language other than Polish) are taken into account. In accordance with the principle adopted to meet the requirements of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, the editors appoint reviewers engaged at a different university or research centre than the one with which the prospective author is affiliated. With texts in a foreign language, the rule is that the reviewer should be affiliated with an institution located outside the author's country.

The appointed reviewers receive an anonymized paper from the Editorial Board, with the journal review form attached (see Appendix). The latter needs to be completed and sent back to the Editorial Board within 2-3 weeks. Depending on the month in which a paper is submitted (the journal is a semi-annual), the review process takes up to 2 months.

The Editorial Board does not disclose the names of reviewers of particular papers, but an alphabetical list of reviewers is posted once a year on the journal's website.

When selecting reviewers, the Editors take into account the absence of conflicts of interest between reviewers and the author (direct personal relations, relations of professional subordination, etc.). The reviews are double-blind.

Apart from ready-made questions which serve the reviewers to award an appropriate number of points to a paper, the review form also contains space for a brief description and summary, in which the reviewers unequivocally express their recommendation as to whether or not the article should be published.

Guided by the concern for the high scholarly quality of the journal, the Editorial Board reserves the right to publish only those texts which receive two positive reviews. In the case of considerable discrepancies in the reviewers’ assessment of a paper, the Editors reserve the right to appoint a third reviewer. The review form is available on the journal's website.

In case of suspected unfair practices, the Journal Secretary initiates an investigation involving the the reviewers/reviewers and the author/author of the text and reports the issue to the Editor-in-Chief. The author is entitled to respond to the allegations and make corrections in the text (e.g. mark the fragment where their authorship is disputed with a footnote, referencing another text that they have inadvertently forgotten). Should the suspicion be confirmed, the Editor-in-Chief decides to reject the text immediately and inform the author thereof.

Open access policy

The journal provides open access to all of its contents in line with the principle that freely accessible research increases and enhances the global development of science and knowledge circulation. The editors encourage authors to publicise research published in the journal in open repositories (following their review process or submission of the final version to the publisher), provided that the link to the journal website's top page and the DOI number of the article are given.

The submission and publication of manuscripts is free for all authors.
