Abstract
The objective of this paper is to analyse the conditions that have enabled the effective diffusion of the concept of collective memory into the field of social movement studies. This primarily concerns the evolution of approaches to theorising the phenomenon of contentious politics, which have gradually begun to take into account the cultural dimension of social movements, including practices of assigning meanings that refer to the past.
The paper also presents two theoretical and methodological proposals for combining the concept of collective memory with studies of contentious politics, namely the concept of the mnemonic capacity of the U.S. gay movement and the concept of mnemonic opportunity structures.
