Abstract
The author of the article analyzes Ukrainian literature of the past century as a part of the history of literature. He draws attention to the peculiarities of the literary canon as well as to the interruption in the process of literary development during the different colonial and totalitarian periods. Adverse social conditions determined the neglect of the tradition. Colonial and totalitarian circumstances slowed down the search for a proper form for a long time, and only during the period of Ukraine’s independence did it become possible to make up for past losses. Overcoming all crises, Ukrainian literature has shown extraordinary vitality and resilience. Such circumstances created the conditions at the end of the twentieth century for the realization of a new quality in its literature, which is being formed to this day.
