Abstract
In the conditions of the war, military vocabulary has become active in the Ukrainian language, in particular, the names of weapons, among which there are both previously known (although usually only to a narrow circle of specialists) and completely new ones. This article analyses verbal proper names of weapons and military equipment, classified by many onomasts as chrematonyms and commodonyms, although the scope of chrematonyms in Slavic linguistics is still not entirely clear. Discussion is still underway as to whether commodity names that are names of series rather than individual objects can be included in proper names. The article adopts the position of the majority of Slavic onomasts that these are proper names. Over 200 verbal proper names of weapons used by the Ukrainian army during the Ukrainian-Russian war have been collected, which have not yet been the subject of onomastic analysis. The article focuses on how these names function in the media discourse with the example of three terms with the highest frequency of use: “Javelin”, “Bayraktar”, “HIMARS”. Their motivation is determined and the degree of adaptation in media texts examined, as all three are borrowings. Special attention is paid to the acquired connotations and functions. The process of transonymization with their participation is described.
