Abstract

The article deals with the problem of language interference in the speech of multilingual preschool children from Ukraine living in Poland and speaking Ukrainian, Russian, Polish and using English to some extent. The research shows the impact and transfer from other languages to the first language (L1) or mother tongue on all language subsystems. Following this, the article draws attention to narratives based on two picture stories. Code-switching, code-mixing of different languages, and the preservation of L1 language skills in foreign-language environment are the main issues discussed in the paper. The results of the research demonstrate a new lingual phenomenon caused by contacting Ukrainian, Russian, and Polish in children’s speech. The article also has applied meaning for school and preschool teachers, speech therapists working with children from Ukraine and other countries in Poland.
