Abstract

Language and culture are inseparable. They influence many aspects of human life, including psychological assessment and self-description of individual differences. The research described in this article concerned the analysis of psychological tools in the context of their linguistic and cultural adaptations. Some significant discrepancies were found in the self-descriptions of the surveyed bilinguals speaking both Polish and English. These differences were observed both in the area of temperament (described using Buss and Plomin’s (1984) EAS questionnaire and its Polish adaptation by Oniszczenko (1997)) and the actual self and ideal self concepts (described using the author’s Adjective Checklist in two language versions). The discrepancies point to the need for a more accurate cultural and linguistic adaptations of these tools.
