Substandard and the possibilities of its stylization in translation from Polish into Czech (based on the prose of Mirosław Nahacz)

Abstract

In this paper, the author focuses on the possibilities of translation solutions in the transfer of regional and social language units from Polish into Czech. These are non-literary formations, defined locally (traditional regional dialects) or socially (sociolects, i.e. speech of certain social groups). The primary source of the analysis is the work of the Polish novelist Mirosław Nahacz – “Bombel” (2004; “Prcek”, translated by Bára Gregorová). Both the original and the translation are characterised by the use of non-standard elements. The translation of so-called substandard linguistic formations poses a specific translatological problem and places special (not only) linguistic demands on the translator. The issue of translating these substandard language units is not dealt with extensively in the translatological literature. The author will try to characterize them, describe and categorize them with respect to the individual features of the Czech dialects, or elements of particular subgroups of Czech dialects.
