The temple of the Thracian Rider near Glava Panega and the problem of Romanisation of Moesia Inferior

Abstract

The article analyzes the sanctuary of the Thracian Horseman in Glava Panega and its significance for research on the process of Romanization in the Balkan provinces. The aim of the study is to determine the nature of religious transformations occurring in the region under Roman rule. The author bases the analysis on archaeological data and interpretations of cult remains. The results indicate that the sanctuary functioned as an important local center of worship, where indigenous beliefs were preserved. At the same time, elements of Greco-Roman religion were incorporated, leading to the emergence of syncretic forms of cult. Roman influence was visible, but it did not lead to the complete replacement of local traditions. The coexistence of different religious elements demonstrates the complex nature of cultural changes in the region. The sanctuary constitutes an example of gradual and selective Romanization. The conclusion is that religious syncretism was a key feature of cultural transformations in Thrace under Roman rule.
