Abstract
The article analyzes ethnic transformations along the lower and middle Danube in the second half of the sixth century on the basis of the surviving fragments of Menander Protector’s Histories. The research problem concerns the role of the Slavs, Avars, Huns, and Germanic peoples in shaping the ethnic and political situation of the Balkans and the Danubian regions. The aim of the study is to present the migratory and political processes that took place after the fall of the Hunnic Empire and to determine the significance of Slavic settlement for the transformation of the region. The author employs historical and source-critical methods, analyzing the accounts of Menander Protector, Jordanes, Procopius of Caesarea, and other Byzantine authors. The article demonstrates that after the collapse of the Hunnic state, the dominant role along the Danube was assumed by Germanic peoples, especially the Gepids, Heruli, and Ostrogoths, who competed for political influence. The author also emphasizes the importance of Slavic expansion, pointing to earlier-than-previously-assumed Slavic settlement along the Danube and in the Balkans, as well as the Slavs’ ability to establish lasting settlements in conquered territories. Despite the military activity of the Huns and Avars, it was the Slavs who brought about the most enduring ethnic transformations in the region under discussion. The results of the analysis indicate that the process of the Slavicization of the Balkans was long-term and of fundamental significance for the later ethnic and political development of the whole of Southeastern Europe.
