Abstract
The article concerns the beginnings of the organization of the Ottoman system in Albanian lands from the late fourteenth to the mid-fifteenth century. The research problem concerns the methods of the Ottoman conquest of Albania and the process of establishing the administrative and socio-economic foundations of Ottoman rule. The aim of the study is to present the successive stages of the conquest of Albanian territories and to analyze the organization of the Sanjak of Arvanid and the timar system. The author employs historical and source-based methods, using Ottoman sources, chronicles, and Ottoman cadastral registers, especially the defter of 1432. The article demonstrates that initially the Turks appeared in Albanian territories as allies of local Christian princes, but gradually moved toward the permanent subjugation of the region. The article discusses the significance of the Battle of Savra in 1385, the establishment of the Sanjak of Arvanid, and the development of the timar system modeled in part on the Byzantine pronoia. The author emphasizes that the Ottoman land and population register of 1432 became the starting point of long-term Albanian resistance against Ottoman rule, culminating in Skanderbeg’s uprising. The results of the analysis indicate that the Ottoman administrative and military system in Albania developed gradually and was based both on the adaptation of local structures and on the systematic subordination of society to the interests of the Ottoman state.
