Abstract
The article discusses the influence of Greek and Byzantine culture on the development of Polish art in the era of the Noble Commonwealth. The research problem concerns the scope and forms of reception of Greco-Byzantine models in architecture, sacred art, and the artistic culture of Poland from the sixteenth to the eighteenth century. The aim of the study is to present selected examples of the influence of the Greek artistic tradition on Polish culture. The author employs an art-historical method, analyzing architecture, sacred art, and iconographic motifs. The article demonstrates that Greek influences reached Poland both through Roman culture and through Byzantium and Ruthenia. The article discusses the reception of the Anastasis model from Jerusalem in sacred architecture, the Neoplatonic symbolism of the dome, the presence of mythological motifs, and the development of the so-called “borderland Baroque,” which combined Italian and Ukrainian-Byzantine influences. The author also emphasizes the role of Marian devotion inspired by Byzantine art. The results of the analysis indicate that Greek and Byzantine culture constituted a lasting and creatively transformed element of Polish art in the early modern period.
