Abstract
The article analyses the influence of Polish émigré circles on the political situation in Romania during the January Uprising. The aim of the study is to demonstrate that the activities of Poles were not limited to efforts connected with the national liberation struggle but also contributed to the strengthening of the young Romanian state. The author employed the historical method based on the analysis of diplomatic correspondence, émigré documents, and Romanian and Polish sources. The research demonstrated that in 1863–1864 Prince Władysław Czartoryski, Ludwik Gradowicz, and Samuel Gluck undertook activities supporting Prince Alexandru Ioan Cuza and his Prime Minister Mihail Kogălniceanu. Poles participated in counteracting the so-called “Monstrous Coalition,” which sought to overthrow Cuza, and their activity contributed to maintaining the political stability of the state and implementing modernising reforms. The author argues that the actions of Polish emissaries were important both for preserving the union of Moldavia and Wallachia and for strengthening Romania’s position in the face of external pressures. Polish emigration played an important role in the process of consolidating the Romanian state, and its contribution was greater than previously assumed in historiography.
