Abstract

The subject of the article is the origins, course, and consequences of the Neo-Slav Congress held in Sofia in July 1910. The aim of the author is to determine the significance of this event for the development of the idea of Neo-Slavism and Slavic cooperation in Bulgaria. The study employs the historical method, analysing the political context of the Slavophile movement and its evolution in Bulgaria and Russia. The author demonstrates that Neo-Slavism emerged from earlier Slavophile and Pan-Slavic traditions, which had played an important role in the process of Bulgaria’s liberation from Ottoman rule. The research indicates, however, that despite its ideological and political significance, the movement failed to achieve a lasting influence on Bulgaria’s political life. The Sofia Congress was intended to develop a common platform for cooperation among Slavic nations but ended in failure due to divergent political interests among the participants and the lack of agreement concerning future political and cultural activities. The author emphasises that the failure of the congress accelerated the disintegration of the Neo-Slav movement. The Sofia Congress constituted both the culmination and the beginning of the end of Neo-Slavism as a viable integrative project in the Slavic world.
