Abstract
The article constitutes an extensive linguistic study devoted to Kajnas, a unique Slavic linguistic variety used in two villages of the Korçë district in Albania: Boboshtica and Drenova. The aim of the author is to describe the origins, structure, and position of this dialect among the Slavic languages. The research is based on materials collected by the French Slavist André Mazon in 1933, later field recordings, and the author’s own observations. The findings indicate that Kajnas emerged as a result of the long-term isolation of a small Slavic community living in an Albanian-speaking environment while simultaneously remaining under strong Greek cultural influence. The author analyses the history of the community, its relations with Albanians, Greeks, and other Slavic groups, and discusses in detail the phonetic, morphological, and lexical features of the dialect. The conclusions lead to the assertion that Kajnas constitutes a distinct and exceptionally valuable testimony to the development of Slavic languages in the Balkans and an example of the persistence of local linguistic identity despite strong assimilatory processes.
