Abstract
The article analyses lexical similarities between Romanian and Albanian and presents the current state of research concerning their origins. The aim of the study is to assess the significance of shared vocabulary for the reconstruction of the history of Balkan languages and peoples. The author employed a comparative-historical method based on the etymological analysis of words occurring in both languages. The article recalls the historical circumstances of the development of Romanian - the Romanisation of Dacia, Slavic influences, and its functioning within the Balkan linguistic league. The research demonstrates the existence of approximately one hundred Romanian words displaying parallels with Albanian, many of them connected with pastoralism, agriculture, fauna, and flora. The author discusses various hypotheses explaining these similarities, including a common Illyrian-Thracian heritage, the proximity of ancient populations, and centuries of linguistic contact. Attention is drawn to the insufficient data available concerning the ancient languages of the Balkans, which makes it impossible to determine conclusively the origin of these parallels.
