Abstract

The author presented the results of research on the oldest discovered fortifications of the legionary fortress in Novae. He discussed the connection of these objects with the Dacian wars conducted by the Roman emperors Domitian and Trajan at the turn of the 1st and 2nd centuries AD. The aim of the article is to reconstruct the subsequent stages of the construction of the fortress's defence system and determine their chronology against the background of political and military events. The author used the archaeological method. He used stratigraphic analysis, documentation of excavations and interpretation of relics of defensive architecture. The research covered mainly the eastern section of the fortifications, where traces of a wooden tower, an earth embankment, defensive ditches, wall foundations and later reconstruction were uncovered. The analysis allowed us to distinguish several phases of the development of the defence system. Design changes were closely related to the military threat and war experiences. The article emphasizes that the analysis of subsequent phases of the construction of the fortress allows for a better understanding of the development of Roman military architecture on the lower Danube and changes in the defensive strategy of the Roman Empire.
