Abstract
The article discusses the mythological motifs of Attys and Europa presented on the tomb sculpture from Novae and their importance in the sepulchral art of the Danube provinces. The aim of the text is to explain the origin of these representations and their role in the decoration of funerary monuments. The author used a historical, artistic and iconographic method. She analysed artefacts discovered during Polish archaeological research in Novae, comparing them with material from Moesia Inferior and other Roman provinces. The state of research on sepulchral sculpture and the difficulties arising from the secondary use of tombstones as building material were discussed. The author showed that mythological motifs were not an element of cult decoration, but had a symbolic function, characteristic of Roman funerary art. Representations of Attys and Europa were associated with the idea of rebirth, immortality and hope for life after death. Their presence also proves the penetration of Greek and Oriental traditions into provincial art. The article emphasizes that the proper interpretation of iconography requires taking into account the archaeological context and the function of monuments in the necropolis.
