Abstract
The article presents an analysis of the geographical and social origins of the senatorial elite active in the lower Danubian provinces of the Roman Empire during the Principate. The study covers 336 individuals—provincial governors and legion commanders—over a period of more than 300 years. The author focuses on three main issues: the representativeness of the source material, the geographical origin, and the social origin of the analyzed elite. Particular attention is devoted to the problem of the incompleteness of epigraphic and literary sources, which document senatorial careers to varying degrees. The analysis shows that the lower Danubian provinces had key military importance, which influenced the selection of elites—individuals with military experience were preferred. At the same time, considerable geographical mobility of senators is visible, and their origins include various regions of the empire, although strongly Romanized areas predominate. The author emphasizes that the social structure of the senatorial elite was diversified, and access to the highest offices depended both on origin and on the course of one’s career (cursus honorum).
