Abstract
The article analyzes the perception of the Battle of Varna in Russian historiography and in the East Slavic chronicle tradition. The author examines the problem of the limited interest in this event in Muscovite sources and the reasons for the battle’s weak resonance in Russian historical consciousness. The aim of the study is to trace the ways in which Varna was presented in Lithuanian-Belarusian chronicles and Russian historical works. The author uses chronicle sources, above all the Raczyński Chronicle and the Bychowiec Chronicle, as well as Russian historiography of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The article demonstrates that Muscovite sources practically did not record the Battle of Varna, which resulted from Moscow’s political dependence on the Golden Horde and its focus on internal conflicts within the Muscovite state. Information about Varna was preserved instead in chronicles from the territory of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, where the greatest attention was paid to the figure of Władysław III. The author also emphasizes that Russian historians devoted little space to this event, usually limiting themselves to general assessments. The results of the analysis indicate that the Battle of Varna did not play a major role in Russian historical tradition, and its presence in the sources was marginal and indirect.
