Abstract
The article examines the participation of the Rus’ principalities in the conflicts between Byzantium and Bulgaria at the turn of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. The purpose of the study is to determine the actual political and military role of Rus’ in the wars waged by the Byzantine Empire against the state of the Asenids. The author employs critical analysis of Byzantine and Rus’ sources, particularly the chronicle of Niketas Choniates and the Hypatian Chronicle. The study demonstrates that earlier historiography often overestimated direct Rus’ assistance to the Bulgarians, relying primarily on references to the participation of Brodnici and Cumans in military campaigns against Byzantium. The author emphasizes the Cuman dimension of Rus’–Byzantine relations, arguing that military actions undertaken by Rus’ princes against the Cumans may have been inspired by Byzantine diplomacy and constituted an indirect form of support for the empire. Particular attention is devoted to the dynastic policy of the Angeloi and to proposed marriage alliances with Rus’ dynasties designed to secure Byzantium’s northern frontier. The conclusions indicate that Rus’ was neither a permanent nor a unified ally of either side but instead pursued policies shaped by its own strategic and commercial interests along the Danube.
