Abstract
The article is devoted to French policy toward the events associated with the First Balkan War. The aim of the study is to determine the motives behind French diplomacy and to assess the consequences of the conflict for the interests of the Third Republic in the Balkans and the Near East. The author employed a historical-political method, analysing diplomatic sources, economic data, and documents relating to the policies of the Great Powers. The findings indicate that France was interested in preserving the status quo in the Balkans primarily for economic reasons connected with investments and credit activities in Turkey and the states of the region. Prior to the outbreak of the war, Paris undertook diplomatic efforts aimed at persuading the Balkan League states and Turkey to avoid conflict. After the commencement of hostilities, France sought to limit its own political involvement while simultaneously counteracting the growing influence of Austria-Hungary and Italy. The author demonstrates that although France’s economic position in the Balkans gradually weakened in favour of Germany, the consequences of the war did not result in any major strategic losses. In his view, French policy toward the Balkan War was subordinated to the protection of economic interests and the maintenance of the balance of power in the region.
