Abstract
The author addressed the problem of the origin of the Phrygians and the time of their appearance in the Balkans and Asia Minor. This issue is one of the most important problems in paleobalkan studies. It is related to determining the place of the Phrygian language in the Indo-European family and reconstructing the migrations of ancient peoples. The aim of the article is to present the state of research on the origin of the Phrygians and critically evaluate the most important hypotheses regarding their linguistic and ethnic relationships. The author used the historical and linguistic method. He analysed epigraphic and onomastic material, ancient glosses and the results of comparative research. He presented the results of research on the classification of the Phrygian language into the group of centum or satem languages. He also discussed the three main interpretations about the origin of the Phrygians (connections with Thracians, Greeks and Armenians). The analysis shows that none of these theories fully explains the origins of the Phrygians or their place among the Indo-European peoples. According to the author, there is still uncertainty among researchers as to their origin and migration chronology. The solution to this problem will depend on consistency in combining the results of linguistic, archaeological and historical research.
