Abstract

The author presented the development and diversification of Roman baths in today's Bulgaria as an important manifestation of the Romanisation of the Balkan provinces. The aim of the article is to characterize the most important types of baths and determine their importance for social life and material culture in the Roman period. The author used the historical and archaeological method. She analysed preserved architectural relics, functional layouts of buildings and the results of research conducted in cities, legionary fortresses and health resorts. The article discusses the technical solutions used in the construction of thermal baths (hypocaustic system), room layouts, methods of heating and water drainage. The baths in Odessos, baths at medicinal hot springs, in urban and rural villas and military camps are described. According to the author, the spread of baths reflected the degree of Romanisation of individual regions and evidenced the adoption of the Roman model of life by the local population. Architectural solutions were adapted to local conditions, while maintaining the basic principles of Roman construction. The article emphasizes that baths had not only a hygienic function, but also a social, recreational and representative one. Their development was a measure of the civilizational changes taking place in Lower Moesia and Thrace under Roman rule.
