Abstract
The author presented the activities of the so-called Scythian monks in Constantinople at the beginning of the reign of Emperor Justin I and their participation in theological disputes in the first half of the 6th century. The aim of the article is to explain the reasons for the stay of monks from Scythia Minor in the capital of the empire and to determine their place in the dispute over the Theopaschytic formula. The author used historical and source research methods. He analysed the correspondence preserved in the Collectio Avellana and other ecclesiastical and historiographic sources. The article presents the positions of the most important participants in the dispute - Emperor Justin I, Justinian, Pope Hormisdas, papal legates and influential representatives of the Constantinople and Roman aristocracy. Particular attention was paid to Justinian's changing attitude and the importance of the senatorial and church circles for the course of the conflict. The analysis showed that the dispute was not only of a theological nature, but also of a political and environmental nature. Its course was determined by the relationships between the imperial court, the Church of Constantinople and the papacy, as well as the influence of the aristocracy from both parts of the empire.
