Abstract
The article presents the state of research on the history of the Despotate of Epirus - one of the states established after the Fourth Crusade on the territories of the former Byzantine Empire. The research problem concerns the development of historiography devoted to Epirus, the scope of available sources, and the main interpretative approaches to the history of this state. The aim of the study is to discuss the most important research concerning the history of Epirus and to assess the current state of knowledge regarding its politics, administration, society, and culture. The author employs historiographical methods and source criticism, analyzing both nineteenth-century studies and contemporary Byzantine scholarship. The article demonstrates that the work of Donald Nicol, who produced a synthesis of the history of the Despotate between 1204 and 1479, was of groundbreaking significance for research on Epirus. The contribution of other scholars dealing with the origins of the Epirote state, its administration, international contacts, and ethnic issues is also discussed. The author emphasizes the research difficulties resulting from the limited number of local sources and the dependence on Byzantine and Western accounts. The results of the analysis indicate that despite considerable scholarly progress, many issues connected with the history of the Despotate of Epirus remain unresolved, especially those concerning its social, economic, and cultural life.
