Theme of the volume: ‘Family life of modern Europeans’
The transformation that the modern family in Europe is undergoing is manifested in a series of phenomena and processes, which also have structural consequences. All of them lead to the need to formulate a question about its future. Is it the death of the family we are talking about? The crisis of family life? Or rather, are we dealing with a process of change manifested in the modernization of the family structure with the accompanying redefinition of the goals that the family is supposed to achieve?
The tensions that arise between the institutional legitimization of family life and the adoption of individualistic ideals by those who are considered (or themselves constitute) family members also seem to be an important issue. The dilemmas arising from this concern the formula for becoming a family member and abandoning the role of family member, which has consequences in the way family solidarity is defined. The multiple forms that the modern family takes, its institutional fragility, and the ambiguity of the social narrative around the concept of family further compound these problems.
The idea around which the content of the articles should focus is an attempt not only to describe how the contemporary Polish family functions but also to explain whether and to what extent the modernization processes taking place will affect its future.
