Abstrakt

The article focuses on the relationship between therapeutic culture and the pathologies of late modernity. The main question is to what extent therapeutic culture addresses the problems of these societies, and to what extent does it create them? It is also important to ask whether the therapist’s discourse plays a critical role in relation to the social order or merely reproduces it. The article argues that, in late-modern societies, therapeutic culture has a dialectical relationship with social pathologies: it both alleviates and contributes to them. Furthermore, while it may serve as a critical force against the existing social order in certain areas, it essentially remains one of the main mechanisms for legitimizing that order. The attempt of the first part is to conceptualize therapeutic culture using analyzes and intuitions of such scholars as Philip Rieff, Frank Furedi, Eva Illouz, Nikolas Rose and Ole Jacob Madsen. The second part focuses on mechanisms through which therapeutic culture perpetuates existing pathologies and helps to create new ones. It also legitimizes the social orders that are characteristic of neoliberal capitalism.
