Abstract
The article describes the more important quality assurance projects in higher education that originated in Poland in 1993-1998. The thesis that in most of the countries of Central and Eastern Europe accreditation agencies are a substitute for central control of the state over higher education is discussed on selected examples of Solutions to the quality monitoring problem existing in those countries. On the basis of studies, observations and results of the discussion that has been going on for many years in the academic community, the author sketches possible scenarios of development and changes in the conceptions being implemented today. The expression optima, I solution here means a solution that perhaps to a lesser degree results from an analysis of real needs, but is the one that has a chance of being accepted by the academic community.
