Interpretive universe in Macbeth by William Shakespeare

Abstract

The article presents a methodological proposal for interpreting Macbeth as a drama about the influence of interpretive abilities on a person’s life and the choices they make. The protagonist of Shakespeare’s tragedy not only solved interpretive puzzles but also created them himself. As a result, other characters were also forced to make intellectual efforts to understand the meaning of what was happening in their environment and throughout Scotland. This way the reading of the play allows us to appreciate the role of literature as a source of questions important to every human being at all times. The students’ statements included in the article confirm that it is worth considering moving beyond the interpretive framework of Macbeth that schools typically reproduce.
