Abstract
Speech therapy diagnosis aims to assess the level of speech development and communication skills of the patient/client/ward, the efficiency and structure of the articulatory apparatus, as well as other functions that are necessary for proper speech development, and to identify abnormalities in the communication process. In recent years, there has been an increase in the importance of myofunctional diagnosis, in which the therapist identifies myofunctional disorders, i.e., a number of abnormalities in the functioning of the orofacial muscles that may contribute to the development of defects in pronunciation, bite, and posture.
The article highlights the importance of the role of the speech therapist as a diagnostician, examining patients of all ages: from newborns to seniors. It points out the main techniques used in speech therapy diagnosis and looks at its individual stages. The validity of including techniques and tools typical for myofunction in diagnostic tests is also considered. In order to illustrate the individual elements of myofunctional diagnosis, the cases of three patients of different ages, referred to the clinic by their parents or specialists, are presented.
Given the results of the above analyses, it can be assumed that an accurate diagnosis—including an assessment of the patient’s posture, muscle tone, breathing pattern, the structure and function of the articulators, articulation, and swallowing pattern—and voice production, supported by therapy that takes myofunction into account, will lead to improved functioning in individuals with abnormal biological processes, anatomical defects in the structure of speech organs, or abnormal habits involving theorofacial muscles in both primary and secondary functions.
