Abstract
This article presents a case study of a 10-year-old boy with acquired anarthria, who, at the age of 8, suffered from autoimmune encephalitis and subsequently spent nine months in a coma at the ‘Budzik’ clinic. The text describes the therapeutic pathway that influenced the development of communication skills in a patient with multiple disabilities. The article discusses the diagnostic process in detail, using, amongst other tools, the DAGG-2 questionnaire, which is used to assess the level of baseline communication and cognitive skills. This made it possible both to accurately determine the boy’s level of communication skills and to identify the individual strategies and techniques used to introduce AAC (augmentative and alternative communication), utilising traditional tools (a communication book) and modern technologies (the C-Eye device). A comparative analysis of the patient’s communication skills was also carried out at the start of therapy and after 20 months of work, which demonstrated, on the one hand, the effectiveness of the measures taken and, on the other, the difficulties and challenges that arose during sessions with the boy. This approach thus made it possible to evaluate the methods and strategies employed, as well as to set further therapeutic goals. Among other things, attention was drawn to the need for greater integration between the home, school and therapeutic environments (individual sessions), and to giving the boy the opportunity to communicate independently and autonomously, without excessive interference from his communication partners. For this to be possible, it is necessary to standardise the activities carried out and to be consistent in the application of specific strategies, techniques and tools that make up the individual communication system. For it is only through constant, regular language stimulation via modelling (the use of communication tools in every situation by different communication partners and in various environments) that there is a chance to build an effective and efficient individual communication system, and thereby to foster the boy’s cognitive, social and emotional development.
