Abstract
The aim of the article is to analyze the language awareness of selected groups of third-grade secondary school students. The author examines data collected through a survey conducted in two schools: one located in a large city, the capital of the country, and the other in a small town in the Lublin region. The overview of the results is based both on a general assessment of the language awareness of the selected group of adolescents and on highlighting the diversity of the environments in which the schools operate, as well as identifying differences between particular classes – the author studied classes learning Polish at the basic level and at the extended level. Moreover, the analysis considers differences among respondents in terms of gender. By analysis of language awareness, the author understands the examination of what the surveyed students think about language, how they assess their own language competence, and to what extent they have actually mastered the principles of the standard codified norm of the Polish language. In the article, language awareness is understood – in accordance with the traditional description of language culture [cf. Markowski 2005] – as the totality of judgments about language characteristic of a given individual or a specific community. Language awareness is also associated with the ability to express oneself correctly and efficiently. The obtained results illustrate to what degree secondary school students, who come from different backgrounds, pay attention to the language they use. It turns out that the majority of adolescents assess their language competence relatively highly and have, to a considerable extent, mastered the principles of the standard language norm, as well as being able to use them properly – correct responses constitute 67% of all answers collected in the questionnaires. The level of language knowledge (correlated with the level of language awareness) in the different environments (small-town and large-city) is almost identical.
