Abstract
This article is a subjectively compiled collection of selected issues that can be classified as the basics of the methodology of studying cities and planning their development and spatial management. The starting point is to show the city’s systemic nature and to provide examples of the city in a systemic context. In this context, it was important to show the transition from the classical systemic approach to the city, grounded in General Systems Theory, to the systemic Complexity Theory observed in recent years. To this end, the concepts of the city as a territorial social system, the city as an ecosystem, and the city as an organism were discussed. Attention was drawn to the fact that Complexity Theory energises the assumptions of General Systems Theory and delves deeper into the structure of the system as a whole, taking into account the certainties and uncertainties of system functioning, as well as the capacity for self-organisation and resilience. A reference to planning processes was the presentation of a set of principles, rules, and guidelines for the procedure of urban development and spatial planning, which, when considered, can make the planning process rational, realistic, and effective, grounded in scientific knowledge and the realities of the existing situation. The article concludes with the presentation of selected, more or less well-known concepts or models of future cities and their relationships. Among them were concepts presented in recent literature: smart city, ‘city for people’, happy city, resilience city, well-tempered city, city of harmonious development, and decent city of decent people.
