Abstract

In the smart city, many sensors, cameras, and meters are being installed to analyse problems in the city, such as traffic flow analysis or parking space availability. Such tools make it easier for local authorities to pursue the appropriate urban policies. The issue of air pollution deserves particular attention. It is one of the most important problems city authorities face today. In this context, a research question may be asked: to what extent do the actions carried out by Polish cities contribute to reducing PM 10 in the air? The study aims to examine the policy of monitoring the status of PM 10 air pollution in Polish cities. In an attempt to answer the research question, the following secondary questions were asked: what is the status of PM 10 air monitoring in Poland? Is there a disparity regarding PM 10 air pollution among urban, suburban, and non-urban areas? The state of air monitoring was examined using descriptive statistics. Analysis of variance was used to investigate the disparity between urban and rural areas. A random sample of 24 measuring stations, each representing urban, suburban, and non-urban areas, was employed in the study. Then, considering associated variables, such as GDP per capita, population, an analysis of covariance was used to examine air quality. The paper consists of three sections. The first presents the definition and role of sustainability in shaping the smart city concept. The second indicates the methodological approach, and the third shows the results of the analysis.
