Abstract

Using a “3 phase model” of transformation the author analyses and compares the situations of the science and technology systems of CEEC and the changes that they then underwent during the nineties. Three groups emerged when we examined the differences between the countries with regard to the advances they have made in their transformations and their prospects for the future development of S&T. While advances in institutional restructuring tend to dominate in the area of public science, the situation in industrial R&D must, in contrast, be assessed as unsatisfactory and its restructuring as largely unresolved. The building of new S&T systems by national and international networking remains therefore the main task in all CEEC, for countries seeking membership to the EU strongly influenced by the envisaged round of EU enlargement.
