Abstract

The presented study identifies the premises for understanding the idea of ecological restoration and shows the benefits that can be obtained from adequately planned restoration of post-mining areas. Ecosystem services were used to link the decision-making process and possible benefits. This approach’s conceptual framework considers environmental benefits (regulatory and provisioning services) and includes social benefits in the assessment. Although it focuses on the restoration of degraded ecosystems, ecological restoration can contribute to the creation or strengthening of cultural services provided by functioning ecosystems. However, the assessment of cultural services is not based on the analysis of the typology of ecosystems or ecological processes but is based on the perception of people who interact with the ecosystems that are the subject of their interest (Brancalion et al. 2014). Hence, the study used a combination of two methods: expert assessment of ecosystem potential (Burkhard et al. 2014), which enables preliminary identification and comparison of benefits provided by ecosystem systems planned in different revitalization scenarios, and verification of these scenarios by potential users, which will take into account their preferences and expectations, combining environmental and social aspects of the revitalization process. The case study Stawy Hubertus, showed that restoration of post-mining areas provides ecosystem services that are identified, used by residents, and for which they have their preferences. This supports the strong recommendation to use ES as a social indicator of restoration, supporting decision-making processes to strengthen residents’ quality of life and ensure the sustainable transformation of post-mining regions.
