Abstract

The aim of this article is to diagnose and assess the level of above-basic digital competences of the inhabitants of the Wielkopolskie voivodeship compared to other regions of Poland. The study is based on the European Digital Competence Framework (DigComp) and the latest data from Statistics Poland (GUS 2024). The methodological approach combines the digital gap analysis, cluster analysis and statistical tests, which allowed for the identification of regional typologies and for determining the position of Wielkopolska on the digital competence map of Poland. The findings reveal significant spatial disparities in digital skills across Polish regions. Wielkopolska is classified among the regions with a relatively high level of advanced digital competences, yet with noticeable gaps in the area of cybersecurity. The identified regional typologies clearly indicate the need for territorially differentiated policies aimed at developing human digital capital, taking into account local resources, socio-economic conditions and existing skill levels. The results highlight the strategic importance of fostering digital competences not only for strengthening the position of individuals in the labour market, but also for enhancing the overall competitiveness and resilience of regions in the context of dynamic technological change. This study contributes to the ongoing debate on the role of digital skills as a crucial factor in reducing spatial inequalities and supporting sustainable regional development within knowledge-based economies.
