Abstract
This paper examines Elizabeth Duval’s novel Madrid será la tumba (2021) and her essay Melancolía. Metamorfosis de una ilusión política (2023) within the framework of contemporary Spanish political literature. It argues that Madrid será la tumba can be interpreted as a “critical novel” in David Becerra Mayor’s sense of the term. The analysis shows that Duval’s writing not only depicts ideological conflicts stemming from the financial crises inherent to capitalism but also offers nuanced exploration of the psychology underlying both right- and left-wing ideologies. Finally, the paper highlights Duval’s emphasis on affective bonds as a potential countermeasure to the detrimental effects of neoliberal economics and neo-fascist ideology.
