Abstract
In the Old Testament texts we find many examples of the use of violence which, although justified in the context of Old Testament legislation, are incomprehensible or even unacceptable in the eyes of many contemporary people. The aim of this article is to present a brief analysis of the text of 1 Macc 2:23-26 as a starting point for a critical reading of the texts of St. Thomas Aquinas contained in his ‘Summa Theologica’. By applying the method of critical analysis of the source texts, it was possible to conclude that, although violence is not the only recommended means of fighting for justice, it may nevertheless be necessary and thus morally justifiable when all other means of righting wrongs and returning to justice have failed.
