Abstract
The article, written by a professor of Church history, who in 2011 at the age of 62 was ordained to priesthood by Cardinal Joachim Meissner from Cologne, provides a doctrinal and pastoral summary of the entire pontificate of Benedict XVI. The author begins by describing his first encounter with Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger and later correspondence with Benedict XVI. Next, he depicts with pain a not very favorable atmosphere in Germany after Ratzinger was elected pope and during his pontificate, even though the election of a German to the papacy after five hundred years should be a special reason for pride.
The analysis of the Pope's teaching begins with a short discussion of the trilogy "Jesus of Nazareth", followed by a scrutiny of the encyclicals of Benedict XVI "Deus Caritas est", "Spe salvi" and "Caritas in veritate". The author also mentions the 24 apostolic journeys undertaken by Benedict XVI during the eight years of his pontificate. He presents the assumptions of the Year of St. Paul, the Year of the Priesthood and the Year of Faith, all closely connected with the idea of the new evangelization and announced by the Pope. Pope Benedict's achievements include also forty- four canonizations and one hundred and five beatifications. The author strongly emphasizes the Pope's merits in interreligious and ecumenical dialog. He shows the role of papal reflection towards a deeper understanding of religious freedom. The dark pages of this pontificate are mentioned as well, mainly the problem of pedophilia in the Church and the Vatileaks affair.
