The Causes and Therapy of Disturbed Communication in the Family

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to describe the causes and therapy of disturbed communication in the family.

Based on the principles of systemic therapy, the author characterizes the most common causes of poor communication in the family, namely collusion, double binding, low self-esteem, improper communication styles, the marital dyad, intergenerational triads, and intra-family boundaries.

The main conclusions drawn from the considerations contained in the paper indicate that during therapy aimed at improving communication within the family, it is necessary to take into account the rules of family functioning that have a negative impact both on the entire family system as well as on its individual members. An important element of this therapy is restoring relationships based on principles that give the most complete autonomy to individual family members.
