Abstract
In the academic community the need to internationalise the universities in a more systematic and organised way is being discussed more and more frequently. Internationalisation is no longer the goal of individual researchers and students, it is now a political issue. Why is this so and how does internationalisation manifest itself? The origins of this phenomenon can be traced to increasing economic globalisation and international integration. The Author discusses this problem more closely and focuses on the internationalisation of education, leaving aside the international aspects of research. She defines the term ‘internationalisation’ and other related terms such as globalisation and Europeanisation. She also discusses various supra-national programs fostering the internationalisation of higher education as well as the role of the Bologna Declaration and the implementation of its resolutions in Western European countries and Poland.
