Abstrakt

The essay analyses various types of memory within artistic practice of Alvin Lucier. From recollections to recordings, and from commemoration to various echoes and resonances – Lucier’s works deal with all kinds and meanings of memory. The essay tackles a vast ar ray of Lucier’s compositions – from his pioneering brainwave Music for Solo Performer to I Remember honouring Morton Feldman, and from seminal I Am Sitting in a Room to (Hartford) Memory Space. Lucier’s compositions are analysed within the context of the works of fellow neoavantgarde composers (especially Feldman and John Cage) as well as fine arts of the 60s and 70s. Contemporary memory studies, especially the thought of Paul Connerton, serve as a crucial reference point for the narrative, in addition to the reflection on time in the arts of the 60s (Pamela M. Lee).
