Abstrakt
The duration of the Early Slavic culture coincides with the period of the Late Antique Little Ice Age, dated to approximately 450-700 CE. Against a broad European paleo-climatic background, a strong relationship is demonstrated between the formation of this culture and the local natural environment, as exemplified by the Vistula River valley east of Krakow, an area well recognised in both paleo-geographical and archaeological terms. Both general thermal and precipitation trends, the clustering of catastrophic phenomena associated with climatic deterioration, and local paleo-geographic conditions influenced the development of features that distinguish and define this culture. These include sunken- featured dwellings equipped with ovens, clay “bread-like” objects, and, in the later phase, clay roasting plates. The population coped with crisis through a combination of migration, particularly the movement of groups from eastern regions into Central Europe, and adaptive strategies in response to changing and challenging climatic, meteorological, and ecological conditions.
