Solidarity as Presence and Empathy: Józef Tischner's Vision of Humanity

Abstract

The aim of the article is to analyze the philosophical reflections of Fr. Józef Tischner on the concept of solidarity. I present it as a key element of his vision of humanity. Tischner understands solidarity not as an abstract ideal but as a challenging commitment requiring courage, compassion, and openness to others. He emphasizes that inauthentic solidarity, when simplified or used instrumentally, can lead to abuse. The foundation of this concept is rooted in Tischner’s anthropology. According to Tischner, a human being is a relational entity, capable of transcending themselves through love, dialogue, and responsibility. Human freedom is tied to the obligation to make decisions in the spirit of solidarity with others, especially in the face of suffering.

Using hermeneutics as a method of interpretation, I draw upon biblical parables that Tischner presented as metaphors of solidarity: Job – illustrates how solidarity manifests through presence and support in suffering, albeit often imperfectly. The Prodigal Son – demonstrates mercy and the readiness to accept others regardless of their mistakes. The Good Samaritan – serves as an example of active solidarity that transcends social and cultural divisions.

In the conclusions, I emphasize that Tischner’s vision of solidarity is based on presence and empathy, which are the foundations of building community. It is a call to transcend selfishness, courageously engage in the lives of others, and responsibly act for the common good.
