Abstract
This article consists of two main parts. In the first part, the author, using the historical-critical method, explored the pericope Matt. 18:21-35. The aim of the analyses undertaken (literary and exegetical-theological) was to identify the essence of Jesus’ message about forgiveness. It turns out that both passages (Matt. 18:21-22; Matt. 18:23-35) are loosely related and emphasize different aspects of forgiveness. The first text emphasizes the quantity of forgiveness (always), and the second - the quality (“from the heart”). In the second part of the article, the author, based on Prison Notes, explored the statements of Blessed Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski on the subject of forgiveness. In turn, the aim of these analyses was to determine whether and to what extent the Primate of the Millennium implemented the message stemming from the pericope Matt. 18:21-35 in his life. Based on the notes of Cardinal Wyszynski, we can conclude that he was in favor of unlimited forgiveness “from the heart”. Such an attitude of the Primate of the Millennium can be an excellent practical commentary on the dialogue between Peter and Jesus (Matt. 18:21-22) and the parable of the unforgivingservant (Matt. 18:23-35).
