Abstract

The aim of this article was to analyze changes in women’s attitudes toward pregnancy and the unborn child over the last fifty years, with particular emphasis on pregnancy acceptance, readiness for motherhood, perception of the unborn child, and the development of prenatal bonding. The study was conducted at the beginning of 2026 using a diagnostic survey method with an original online questionnaire. The participants were women who gave birth between 1980 and 2026. The analysis of the collected empirical material demonstrated a high level of pregnancy acceptance and readiness to assume the maternal role across most cohorts. The findings also revealed a gradual increase in perceiving the unborn child as a separate individual and a growing importance of prenatal emotional bonding. Contemporary women were more likely to perceive pregnancy not only as a biological condition, but also as the beginning of a relationship with the child. The respondents demonstrated increasing emotional involvement during pregnancy, expressed through reacting to fetal movements, talking to the unborn child, and imagining the child after birth. The obtained results suggest significant psychosocial transformations in the understanding of motherhood and the prenatal mother-child relationship over recent decades.
