Abstract

The researcher has four definitions of scientific career to choose from: 1) scientific career as the road to status and the role of scientific authority; 2) scientific career as the road to status and the role of "lord of the field" - the patron of many clients; 3) scientific career as the road to authorised mastery, travelled faster than by peers; 4) scientific career as the road to power and wealth thanks to competence in a specific area of knowledge. If we choose to study scientific career as the road to status and the role of scientific authority (so important in the theatre of scientific life), we must try to find out if the effort to become an authority is undertaken in a circle whose style of research can be said to be determined by "the line of investigative problem solving". The author also discusses the nature of scientific research, careers in "scholar" science and careers in the science of "researchers cum theorists". The article ends with several conclusions concerning the picking out and backing of persons with intellectual and moral potential disposing towards becoming a scholar who aspires to be a scientific authority and the adequate moulding of the "basic personality of the actor of scientific life" who acts according to the "line of investigative problem solving".
