Abstract

The article describes the current state of retrospective bibliographies of articles from Polish periodical publications. It summarizes work in this area over the past 30 years. It also provides a review of retrospective bibliographies of articles and indexes of periodicals from other European countries, incl. Germany, former Yugoslavia, Hungary and Great Britain. Drawing on his work on the Bibliografia zawartości czasopism warszawskich 1795–1831 [Index of Warsaw Periodicals 1795–1831], the author demonstrates the importance of this type of work for literary and cultural researchers and outlines the challenges bibliographers face.
