About the Journal

Purpose and thematic scope of the journal

The objective of “Poznańskie Studia Slawistyczne” (“Poznan Slavic Studies”) is to publish research results related to Slavonic and Balkan studies in the broadest sense, addressed to all the Polish and foreign experts and admirers of the Slavonic and Balkan cultures. The journal publishes papers on philology (literature and language), folklore, anthropology, culture, historiography, religion and sociology that present multifaceted, interdisciplinary and often comparative approaches and deal with various issues of the Slavonic heritage.

Each issue of the journal is devoted to a different subject matter and run by a different thematic editor. Main themes of each issue aim to answer current challenges of humanities. The journal's leading discipline is literature studies, but monographic issues also embrace linguistics, culture, history, art history, religion or sociology. Therefore, we present intercultural and interdisciplinary research, representing various methodologies and research perspectives. The share of texts going beyond literary studies varies depending on the leading theme of a given issue. For example: issue no. 3 Spell, invocation, counterspell. Magical power of words in slavic folklore) is devoted to anthropology and folklore studies, issue no. 10 (Relation State Church in history and culture) is dominated by a historical and cultural perspective, and issue no. 13 (Form and function in Slavic languages and texts of culture) is interdisciplinary in nature. It includes theoretical and historical literary considerations, translation, linguistics, art history (painting, film, architecture).

Papers that do not strictly match the monographic theme of a given issue but are somehow related to it are published in the section entitled Wokół tematu (Around the theme). Papers that go beyond the subject matter of the issue, but touch upon issues important for Slavonic studies and are worthy of publication, can be found in the section entitledPoza tematem (Beyond the theme). We also include review articles and polemics, which do not have to be in line with the main theme of the issue. However, the main part of the journal is devoted to the main theme of each issue.

The journal strives to expand the space for dialogue between cultures and contributes to deepening scientific reflection on literature, languages and history, as well anthropological and aesthetic categories that define the Slavic culture of the past and present. It inspires discussion and polemics that help redefine the objectives and directions of the development of Slavic studies, that now more than ever before take into account the cultural perspective, and that need to answer many questions arising from the constantly changing reality of the Slavic world.

Review process

Articles submitted for publication in “Poznańskie Studia Slawistyczne” (“Poznan Slavic Studies”) are reviewed in the following way:

  1. Editorial review - the paper is read by the thematic editor of the issue, the editor-in-chief or deputy editor-in-chief and a selected member of the Scientific Council. After a positive assessment by the editor, the paper is submitted for external review.
  2. The editor reserves the right to reject papers and shorten texts that do not meet the editorial requirements included in the author guidelines.
  3. In order to evaluate each article, the editorial board shall appoint two independent reviewers from outside the editorial board, the entity issuing the journal, and also from outside the author's academic centre. The articles are addressed to high-class specialists in the given field who know the language of publication. We ask reviewers to provide their evaluation within three weeks.
  4. For texts by foreign authors, at least one of the reviewers is affiliated with a foreign institution outside the country in which the author is affiliated.
  5. The Journal's Editorial Board makes sure the review procedure is free from any kind of conflict of interest.
  6. Two negative reviews result in the rejection of the article.
  7. In case of conflicting opinions of reviewers, the article may be referred to a third reviewer or to a member of the Scientific Council (together with both reviews). The decision to publish or reject an article may also be taken by the editor-in-chief after consultation with the thematic editor, the deputy editor or without further consultation.
  8. The review is presented in written form and clearly states whether the paper should be sent to print without any changes, printed after corrections or rejected. It is communicated to the editorial board (in its entirety and kept confidential) and provided to the author (the part intended for the author).
  9. Most often, the author is asked to return the corrected text within three weeks of receiving the review that calls for changes to be made.

The rules of reviewing articles submitted for publication in “Poznańskie Studia Slawistyczne”  are consistent with the guidelines of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, ethical rules and good practices.

The reviewing of texts takes place in accordance with the double-blind review process, recommended by the Ministry, allowing to maintain the anonymity of the author and the reviewer.

Review articles are also submit for review.

Review forms available for download: polski, English, český, hrvatski, cрпски, български, македонски, русский, українськa, Formularz recenzji artykułu recenzyjnego (review form).

The list of reviewers is published at the end of each calendar year.

By sending an article to the editorial board of Poznańskie Studia Slawistyczne, the Author agrees to the review process adopted in the journal, as well as with the rules of professional conduct

By sending an article for publication, the author also declares that the work is original and that he or she has unlimited copyright (personal and economic) to the work submitted for publication (this also applies to appendixes: illustrations, charts, etc.), which are then transferred to “Poznańskie Studia Slawistyczne”.

In case of co-authorship, it is necessary to send a statement on the percentage share of individual authors. The statement can be downloaded from the journal's website.

Open Access Policy

The journal provides immediate and open access to all its contents, in accordance with the assumption that an unlimited access to research facilitates and stimulates the global development of science and exchange of knowledge. The editors encourage authors to place their articles published by the journal in open repositories (after the review or final publisher's version) by providing a link to journal's website and article's DOI number.

Ethical rules

High scientific and ethical standards in the publication process are a priority for the editorial team. They follow the principles set out by COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics) and apply to members of the editorial board, scientific council, authors, reviewers and publishers of the journal.

Ethical rules applicable to the editorial team

The editors of the journal, in cooperation with the international scientific council, conduct an initial evaluation and selection of the articles submitted by the authors. Only original, linguistically and methodologically correct materials are accepted to further stages of the publishing process. If the article receives a negative preliminary assessment of the editorial team, it is not sent to review and print. The editorial team notifies the author of its decision in writing. A text that has not been accepted for publication may be stored in the journal's archives, accompanied by an appropriate note, but in no way may it be used without the author's consent. In the case of a positive initial opinion of the editorial team, the article is sent for review by two independent reviewers - the review procedure is confidential and follows the double-blind review process. The author is informed in writing of the results of all assessments (that of the editors and both reviewers).

At all stages of the review process of the materials received, the editors and the reviewers take into account substantive and linguistic criteria only. The editorial team does not formulate assessments of a personal nature, referring to the nationality, religion or gender of the authors. The editorial team guarantees the authors the opportunity to get acquainted with the full content of the review, while keeping it confidential.

In order to ensure the originality and high quality of published articles, the journal refers to the most up-to-date evaluation procedures and to the CrossCheck system. CrossCheck is a project submitted by CrossRef and iThenticate to provide professional assistance in preventing the publication of copyright infringing works and other academic misconduct. CrossCheck provides high quality tools to compare documents with the world's largest database of scientific materials from various sources, from numerous publishers. Works with improper citations or plagiarisms will be rejected by the editorial office, and violations of copyright or good scientific practice will be reported to the management of the institutions employing the author.

Ethical rules applicable to authors

Authors submitting a paper for printing are responsible for its quality and originality. Any form of scientific misconduct (e.g. quoting other authors’ works without a proper reference, not revealing the authorship or assistance from research funding institutions) will result in the rejection of the article by the editors. It is also the responsibility of the author to ensure that the proposed article has never been printed in an identical form before. If the paper presents a modified version of an older publication, this should be clearly indicated when the article is sent to the editors.
The editorial team has the right to decide whether or not to publish the paper. In case of a positive decision, the paper will be accompanied by information about the place and form of the first publication.

Collective works submitted for publishing must be accompanied by information about the actual number of authors, the authors' affiliation, as well as their contribution to the work (i.e. information about the author of each part of the work, the theses, the methodology, etc.). The author is also obliged to provide, where relevant, information about the sources of financing of the paper, the contribution of scientific and research institutions and associations, or other entities. The main responsibility for the accuracy of this information lies with the author submitting the text. In the case of a multi-author work, each article should be accompanied by a handwritten signed statement of the author that he/she agrees with the content of the work and guarantees the robustness of the paper.

The editorial team is obliged to remind that ghostwriting (hiding a significant contribution of another author to the paper) and guest authorship or honorary authorship (claiming the authorship of a person whose contribution to the work was insignificant or non-existent) are considered to be manifestations of scientific unreliability, and any such cases will be exposed. In order to avoid such cases in “Poznańskie Studia Slawistyczne”, the editorial team kindly asks all potential authors to honestly disclose the actual contribution to the publication (including affiliations and the type of the contribution, i.e. information about who is the author of the concepts, assumptions, methods, etc. used in the preparation of the publication). We would also like to inform that the main responsibility lies with the author submitting the manuscript.

The editorial team will document every form of scientific misconduct, especially breaking and violating of ethical rules applied in science.

The article is submitted for publication via the Open Journal System of the Adam Mickiewicz University, see). This allows for immediate archiving of the original text file, which will be submitted to two external reviewers after the editorial decision is taken. The Open Journal System of Adam Mickiewicz University also allows for the archiving of subsequent versions of papers (taking into account, for example, the comments of reviewers or corrections made by the author). This guarantees transparency of the publishing process and eliminates potential errors (e.g. resulting from an inappropriate file being sent for publication).

Ethical rules applicable to reviewers

The review procedure is compliant with the requirements of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, published in the guide Dobre praktyki w procedurach recenzyjnych w nauce (Good Practices in Review Procedures in Science).

The reviewer shall not be called upon to review the article if there is any suspicion of a conflict of interest that arises, for example, from cooperation or other relationships between the reviewer and the author.

The reviewer is obliged to issue a substantive opinion on the article submitted. The opinion may not contain comments of a personal nature or value judgements not justified by substantive arguments. The reviewer's assessment should include answers to questions asked in the reviewer's form (the editorial team is responsible for submitting the form to the reviewer - the form can be also downloaded from the the journal's website on the Open Journal System of Adam Mickiewicz University).  The review must end with a clear conclusion - positive or negative - regarding the publication of the article under review. In the event of divergent or contradictory opinions of the reviewers, the editorial team shall appoint a third reviewer or ask for an evaluation of a scientific journal member specialising in a given field. An expert review obtained as a result of such a procedure shall be binding on the editorial team.

Review forms with the signature of the reviewers and the date of their completion are placed in the archive of the journal.

The reviewer shall not use the evaluated articles or their fragments for his or her own purposes without the written consent of the author.
